The Crow Club
Established 1983
Vashon Island
The Crow Club was founded by Nathan Amondson at the Vashon Island Elementary School in March of 1983. The first meeting was attended by students at Vashon elementary and by Phyllis and Ray Shahan with their rescued crow.
The Crow Club bylaws include a provision that everyone must raise hands for any comments or questions, including teachers. Other bylaws call for members to do research on the common crow, and not shoot or hate them.

Meeting #1

The first Crow Club was formed after a group of students from Vashon Elementary read the book "Cry of the Crow" in Mr. Gleb's 5th grade class. Along with the assistance of the librarian, Mrs. Neal, Nathan started the first Crow Club along with a guest appearance of Phyllis and Ray's rescued crow. The crow was rescued by the Ray's and nurtured back to health. The crow could imitate Phyllis' voice and call their pet dog, much to the chagrin of their dog. The crow could also perfectly imitate the sound of their 1970's telephone along with various other imitations.
The first Crow Club featured crow shaped cookies, a retelling of the Ray's corvid rescue and various other corvid related activities. Since the first meeting in March of 1983, the Crow Club has met several times in Washington state and California including a corvid themed art exhibit in a renouned art gallery with some of Los Angeles' up and coming artists.

The Crow Club celebrates the intelligence, mystery, and beauty of corvids through the lenses of science, art, history, and culture. Our mission is to foster curiosity, creativity, and appreciation for these remarkable birds by exploring their roles in ecosystems, mythology, folklore, and artistic expression. Through education, collaboration, and storytelling, we aim to deepen our understanding of corvids while inspiring a community of enthusiasts, researchers, and artists to share in the wonder of these legendary creatures.
